Difference between College and University – Which One to Choose

With two higher education options, every student must learn about difference between college and university before making the final choice. Apparently, a lot of people still misunderstand about what truly differs between them. Well, these people think university is funded by state while college is a private school. They even think taking degree in university is better than in college. Actually, those assumptions are not fully right.

Let’s start discussing difference between college and university the by defining a college. College is a smaller institution which only offers undergraduate degree. It can be 1-year and 2-year degree. Usually, this degree is used as basic degree by the student to continue to 4-year school in university. For instance, a student who is willing to learn astronomy will attend a degree in college to learn general science. Then, he/she transfers to university to attend 4-year astronomy degree. So, it’s true to conclude that college provides stepping stone for students to get higher degree in university. It confirms the important role of a college.

Usually, community colleges provide associate degrees and certificates and bachelor degrees occasionally. Most technical and community colleges provide programs with certain focus. The colleges are a level below university but the number of students can be as many as of universities.

Meanwhile, defining the university is the next thing to learn about the difference between college and university. University is defined as institution offering undergraduate and also graduate degrees. The graduate programs include master degree and doctorate degree. The university has also law and medical school for students who wish to pursue professional degree. And it also comes with more diverse program and curriculum.

It’s possible for college to receive the university status. But, it has to meet particular requirements. The first requirement is related to its organization. College has to offer graduate studies program for at least 5 years. And it has to be separated from undergraduate degrees. And, it should also be undergraduate degrees that lead to higher degrees such as bachelor degrees. The degrees should be in various academic subjects as well. The third requirement is related to the resources. These include equipment and facility and also financial resources that support both graduate and the professional programs. The fourth requirement is accreditation. It must receive accreditation from the state.

By learning the basics of difference between college and university, it should not be hard for you to make a choice for your higher degree.

Homeschooling Pros and Cons as Considerations

It is not easy to explain homeschooling pros and cons from equal view. As similar, people see homeschooling is solution to reduce unsafely learning place where students get excess bullying. As you know, homeschooling is not new system. Long time ago, rich and noble people taught their children at home without sending them to the school. They learn many things from tutor or parents.

Benefits of homeschooling

You even see news about violence at school and massive bullying. In digital era, bullying is not just in real life, but also internet. These matters give unfriendly environment for learning. Instead of having good knowledge, students will end up in deep trouble. One thing about homeschooling pros and cons is preventing unsafely environment for children. In school, parent cannot control what children do. It does not mean homeschooling is lack of independency. On contrary, children will enjoy learn with others during social gathering without fear for bullying.

You can make schedule to learn, time for break, conduction test, etc. You do not have to follow strict schedule as similar to public school. Flexible is the most advantage of homeschooling. Besides the time, lesson and activity are able to be managed to suit the children’s preference. Doing math in an hour is very exhausted without fun activity. Children hardly get this thing at school. Besides, parent is able to focus with children interest. You may have two kids and each of them has different interest. With flexible property, you just give lesson to strength their knowledge based on what they want.

Disadvantages of homeschooling

Knowing homeschooling pros and cons is important. You cannot just rely on good sides and get rid of disadvantage easily. Controversy about homeschooling rises due to inadequacy and gaps of education. For children in elementary school, parents are able to support knowledge easily. However, it takes more than books and course material to teach high school student at home. Gaps of educations mean the result of this system is different with regular school. This is the reason why government wants to create specific regulation for this system to ensure its quality.

The biggest concern in homeschooling pros and cons is social opportunity. Some people think homeschooling kill social ability. Children will find difficulty to interact with others. In public school, students interact with classmates, senior, teacher, and others. Social ability has dramatic change since digital era. To fight this accusation, homeschoolers show the result of education in college. Research show, there is no significant problem for children with homeschooling to communicate and interact with other.
